As daylight came, everyone’s worst fears were realized. The rains from Saturday did not cease, but poured more and more. However, just as considerations were being made info cancelling the day’s racing, we received a break from the rain gods.
At about 12:30 pm the rain stopped and the track started to dry. Everyone was eager to see the high powered cars from Trinidad take on the local monsters of Team Mohamed’s Nissan GTR and Shawn Persaud’s Toyota Caldina.
After having only one previous pass on the track, the Sheldon Bissessar Racing’s Rail Car, driven by Andy Bissessar, lined up against Team Mohamed’s ‘Goliath’ GTR, driven by Texan Terence Cox, as the main event for the day. The fans certainly got a thrill of a race as the GTR and the Rail car roared down the 1000 ft straight, crossing the line side by side. The winner…? The Team Mohamed’s GTR, by 1/10th of a second!
The GTR recorded a time of 7.527 whilst the rail car ran a 7.627 for a close finish as you will ever see.
The second highlight of the day was the ‘Tweety’ Nissan Laurel out of Trinidad vs the Toyota Caldina of Shawn Persaud. The Nissan was never really able to put down the power from it’s V8 power plant on the South Dakota surface and so the AWD Caldina made light work of it to take the win.
